PART I

Directions: By the end of this activity, you will be able to analyze a recent trend or issue in policing related to police ethics.

Examine a current event related to police ethics (corruption, excessive use of force, racial profiling, etc.) and prepare a report on your findings. Your report should focus on a particular ethical event and its impact on the police agency and community.

Your report should include at least four to seven pages (not including a cover page or reference page) and meet the following Police Ethics Report Requirements:

• Include a cover page
• Provide an overview of the current event
• Provide a comparison of the current event to the concepts learned in this unit
• Provide the impacts that the event has had on the police agency and community
• Provide a summary to highlight significant concepts of the report
• Include a reference page

Required Resources:

• Internet access

Submission Requirements:

• Create a four to seven page report (not including the cover and reference pages)

PART II

Directions: Research another current event related to police ethics (corruption, excessive use of force, racial profiling, etc.) and write a report on your findings. Make sure this event is of a completely different nature than the one for Part 1 of the homework in this module. Your report should include at least four to seven pages (not including a cover page or reference page).

Please keep the following in mind when you conduct your research:

• What are some ethical challenges facing law enforcement agencies in the United States?
• How would you define "police ethics"?
• For the police, being ethical should include holding themselves and others accountable for their actions.
• What are some of the unique ethical problems that community policing can pose?
• COPPS presents some unique ethical dilemmas because COPPS officers have greater discretion and more public interaction than other officers do. One example of an ethical problem that arises more frequently under COPPS is that of gratuities.

The report should include the following:
