Assignment: How would you define addiction? Addiction can be defined as the psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a chemical, drug, or substance even though it is causing psychological and physical harm to the person who consumes the drug. Drug addiction is when someone is unable to easily stop using a drug despite the psychological, physical, financial, and sociological consequences of their drug use. Addiction is not just physical. Any addiction starts from the brain. The withdrawal that a person faces after stopping drugs starts from physical symptoms but then it has an equal effect on a person mentally. When you are addicted to drugs then they occupy most of your thoughts when you are not under the influence of one. The effect of drugs starts from the brain, they work on the brain which then relaxes the whole body.

I found some stats for ND approximately 89,000 North Dakotans - 11.7% of the state population - use illegal drugs and another 40,000 - 5.26% of the state population - abuse alcohol in a given year. As a consequence, 18.42% of all deaths in North Dakota between 2008 and 2017 were caused by drugs and alcohol, nearly six percentage points above the national average of 12.71% for drug- and alcohol-induced deaths. Across the state, alcohol is the most common substance of abuse-61.8% consumed alcohol regularly. In Bismarck's Burleigh County, 23% of adults engaged in binge drinking in 2018, notably higher than the national average of 17%. Alcohol-related crime is also high in the region. According to a study conducted by CBS News, 30 percent of North Dakota residents admitted to binge drinking in the past 30 days. To break that statistic down, nearly one out of every three North Dakota residents drank in excess at least once in the prior month. North Dakota also has 40 percent or more of traffic deaths in 2019 involved drunk drivers. My thoughts on reading the stats we not that surprising to me. Working in Law Enforcement I witnessed many arrests made for driving under the influence and many of them are two to three times over the legal limit. It is frustrating to watch when a ride from a friend or uber can save a life and possibly, save yourself legal charges, jail time, and money. My feeling is why take a risk when other options are available?
