Question: You are reviewing an article for publication in a medical journal. In the study described in the article, 100 patients (average age 62) had joint replacement surgery. 100 additional patients (average age 71) were chosen at random from a group of healthy volunteers. Both groups were asked to fill out a survey that asked them about their symptoms. Based on the results of the survey, the author of the article claims that joint replacement surgery improved patient outcomes such as pain-free days, mobility, and other factors.
