Problem
Students will take turns to perform the task in each of the three attention conditions. Each participant will complete three trials in each condition. The tester will record the time of completion for each trial and any observations regarding performance changes. All trials should be completed before switching to a new condition.
Condition 1
In this condition, participants must walk the course as quickly as possible, altering stride in order to contact each target line. If a target line is missed, repeat the trial.
Condition 2
In condition 2, participants will repeat the task outlined in Condition 1 but they must now do so while balancing a ball on a tennis racquet. If they miss a target line or drop the ball, repeat the trial.
Condition 3
In condition 3, participants will repeat the task outlined in Condition 2, but will do so while reciting 5 numbers backward (counting down). If a target line is missed or the ball is dropped, repeat the trial.
• Based on your observation, describe the behavioral changes of the students from condition 1 to condition 3.
• Based on your results, how would you conclude the relationship between attentional capacity and performance? Could you give another example to show this relationship
A. From condition 1 to condition 3, the attentional demand increased gradually by adding one additional task each time, did the performance change gradually as well? In another word, was the performance change from condition 1 to condition 2 equal to that from condition 2 to condition 3? Explain why unequal if so?
B. Should the attentional demands be high or low during skill acquisition, and as a teacher, how would you adjust the attentional demands to facilitate skill acquisition?
