Question: Hypothetical client: Jess is a 16-year-old indigenous youth who identifies as female and lives on the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve. Jess is completing her high school degree in a section one classroom due to her lack of attendance at school, marihuana drug abuse while in school, and behaviour towards certain teachers. Jess states experiencing intense anger that can lead to self-harming when being told what to do by an adult or her parents. Jess states she has always been an angry child and gets nervous when meeting new people as she feels they are judging and labelling her. Jess is coming to the classroom counsellor regularly as she states this is the only safe place she can discuss her mental health and how she feels moving forward in her life.
Given this client how would you conceptualize presenting concerns brought into counselling by this at-risk indigenous youth? Consider the therapeutic alliance and experiences that a at-risk indigenous youth may have had such as intergenerational trauma, personal trauma such as adverse childhood experiences, or experiences of oppression and/or marginalization or anything that you believe may have contributed to them seeking counselling.
