Children should be allowed to be carefree and shielded from life's difficulties or informed in an age-appropriate way. Working in the youth protection field, I, unfortunately, see many cases of parentification, which is heartbreaking. Parentified children I have worked with have discussed finances, parents' mental health and more with me, to the point that I had to take a moment to collect myself. Based on this, I agree with the author's exploration of suppression of the true self, as I have witnessed firsthand this impact (Goldner et al., 2022).

As someone who finds attachment theory fascinating, I am very interested in the relationship Goldner et al. (2022) presented. As I mentioned, I see many parentification cases with the children I work with. Consequently, heavily parentified children seem to suppress their emotions for their parent's or siblings' betterment, leading to mental health challenges. Specifically, when a child is parentified, it correlates with negative internal working models and psychopathology (Goldner et al., 2022).
