Question: Jonathan is an undocumented immigrant who came to the United States from Central America seeking a better life for his family. His brought his wife and their 11-month-old daughter. They arrived in the United States 2 years ago. Jonathan speaks very little English and has worked various jobs to provide for his family. Jonathan and his family do not have health insurance. None of them have seen a healthcare provider since they arrived in the United States. Jonathan often does not feel well and has frequent pain in his extremities. When this occurs, he self- medicates with over-the-counter medications to ease symptoms because he cannot afford to see a healthcare provider. Even if he could afford it, he did not know of a provider who spoke Spanish. Jonathan understands the importance of healthcare but knows that there are barriers to access.1.
