Question: What would happen if a holobiont regressed back to host and symbiont microbiota?

As discussed in lecture, holobionts are an organism (host) and its collective symbiont microbiota. A holobiont evolves as a whole, rather than each part independent of each other. In humans, for example, the microbiota in the gut evolve as the human host evolves, and the microbiota are passed down to offspring from the original host. Because he holobiont evolves as a whole, it also experiences natural selection as a whole.

If a human host and its gut microbiota evolved separate from one another, how would this affect the human and microbiota as individuals? Would the human gut be less reliable or consistent, or would there be another outcome?
