Name and describe three research methods used in healthcare. How would these methods be used in a healthcare setting?

Qualitative research incorporates recording, interpreting, and evaluating non-numerical data with an effort to discover the deeper meaning of human experiences and behaviors such as beliefs, attitudes, and interactions. In healthcare, qualitative research is used to understand patterns of health behaviors, describe lived experiences, develop behavioral theories, explore healthcare needs, and design interventions.

Quantitative research methods use numerical data that is converted and are often described using statistical methods which essentially help the researcher to draw inferences. A cohort study concentrates on a specific population over an extended period. A cohort study identifies and follows groups of patients that experience the same event(s). In the event of a cohort study the specific population of patients are not examined several times over an extended period, instead the people who fit the demographic that's being studied at the time are being examined. When it comes to healthcare, this type of research method can be beneficial for etiology and prognosis research.

Mixed-methods research involves the collection and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data with a goal to solve different but related questions, or at times the same questions. The roles of this methodological approach are clear in an understanding of the situation (the what), meaning, norms, values (the why or how) within a single research question. In a healthcare mixed-methods study can be used to explore the relationship between nursing care practices and patient satisfaction. This method of research is advantageous in developing new and better environmental and contextual interventions, gearing investigations to community-identified cultural and ethnic factors that influence illness presentation and acceptance of treatment.
