Case Study: First page: Insert yourself as the antagonist or protagonist of your chosen story. Using your unique personality, take a key section of the story and rewrite it featuring yourself as the antagonist or protagonist. Be sure to include dialogue between you as a character and other characters.

Second page: Compare and contrast the difference between the original antagonist or protagonist and yourself. How are your personalities, motivations, interests, and skills different or the same? Would there be different symbols and motifs? Analyze the difference it would make in the story as a whole if you were in the story instead of the original character. Include what the main conflict, the climax, and resolution would be.

Questions:

• What would the theme of the story be if the above changes were made to it?
• How would the tone change if you were in the story?
• Evaluate the value of the story if the above changes had been made? What might readers learn from it? Would it be assigned in literature classes? Would college students like it? Explain your answers to these questions
• After going through these four steps/pages, write a thesis statement that sums up in one or two sentences what you discovered about character in fiction. Write the thesis statement in the line just below the title of your paper.
