In the movie Sophie Choice, a woman was forced to choose one of her children to send to the gas chamber. If she does not decide, both will be killed.

How would the ethical systems RESOLVE THIS DILEMMA? Please answer how EACH ethical system would RESOLVE the dilemma.

Here are the ethical systems:

  • The ethics of virtue: ethical system that bases ethics largely upon character and possession of virtues.
  • Natural law: the idea that principles of morals and rights are inherent in nature and not human-made; such laws are discovered by reason but exist apart from humankind.
  • Religious ethics: ethical system that is based on religious beliefs of good and evil; what is good is that which is God's will.
  • Ethical formalism is a deontological ethical system, which is solely concerned with the inherent nature of the act being judged; ethical system that focuses on duty; holds that the only thing truly good is a good will, and that what is good is that which conforms to the categorical imperative.
  • Utilitarianism is a teleological ethical system, which judges the consequences of an act; ethical system that claims that the greatest good is that which results in the greatest happiness for the greatest number.
  • The ethics of care: ethical system that defines good as meeting the needs of others and preserving and enriching relationships.
