Jane is a 70-year-old Caucasian female who is admitted to the hospital with compression fractures of L1 and L2. She presented to the emergency department with severe pain in her back that she rated an 8/10. During her admission, she is diagnosed with osteoporosis. Her past medical/surgical history is mostly unremarkable other than rheumatoid arthritis and a total hysterectomy at age 62. Her height is 64 inches and weight is 124 lbs. She states that she was in aerobics class exercising when she felt a sudden sharp pain in her back. She is married and has 3 grown children and seven grandchildren who all live within 30 minutes of her. Her husband is at her bedside.

5. Jane asks you what she can do to strengthen her bones and prevent future fractures. Explain at least two things that you would teach the patient to do to promote bone health and fracture prevention. Describe how you would teach these concepts to the patient.
