Bioremediation is the use of microorganisms to degrade environmental pollutants. Many pollutants contain only carbon and hydrogen (oil being one example). The chemical reactions are complicated, but in general the microorganisms react the pollutant hydrocarbon with O2 to produce CO2 and other carbon- containing compounds that are incorporated into the organism's biomass. How would increasing levels of CO2 in the environment affect the bioremediation reaction?
Using the following thermochemical equation, determine the amount of heat produced per kg of CO2 formed during the combustion of benzene (C6H6). 2 C6H6(l) + 15 O2(g) ? 12 CO2(g) + 6 H2O(g) ?H°rxn = -6278 kJ
how efficient is the extraction of the tea leaves containing 1.0 g of caffeine with the two 3 ml portions of chloroform
Why does the ionisation of two or more electrons from an atom of a transition element take place with the removal of s electrons in preference to the d electrons?
As the temperature continues to increase, the probabilities temperature continues to increase, the probabilities will reach a limiting value. What is this limiting value?
A compound contains 40.00% carbon, 6.67% hydrogen, and 53.33% oxygen. Determine the empirical formula of the compound. Give the chemical formula for calcium phosphate.
We have learned in this chapter that many ionic solids dissolve in water as strong electrolytes, that is, as separated ions in solution. What properties of water facilitate this process? Would you expect ionic compounds to be soluble in elemental ..
Calculate the delta H and delta S if the temperature of 1.75 moles of Hg(l) is increased from 0.00C to 75.0C at 1 bar. Over this temperatur range, Cp,m(J K^-1 mol^-1)=30.093-4.944 x 10^-3T/K.
1.0 M acid and two pt electrodes connected to a voltmeter. You then add 10.00 ml of 1.00 M Fe^+2 solution to the beaker. The temperature of the solution is maintained at 25 C.(R= 8.314 coulomb V/(mol K), F= 9.64853 x 10^4 coulomb/mol)
Name 4 properties of a compound that is directly influenced by the polarity of the compond. And state the 2 most important factors that affect the
The equilibrium constant willYet another reaction has an equilibrium constant at 25 . It is an exothermic reaction, giving off quite a bit of heat while the reaction proceeds. If the temperature is raised to 200 , what will happen to the equilibri..
Vitamin C is essential for prevention of scurvy (and large doses may be effective in preventing colds). Combustion of a 0.2000-g sample of this carbon-hydrogen-oxygen compound yields 0.2998 g CO2 and 0.0819 g H2O. What is the EMPIRICAL FORMULA of ..
100.0 mL of 1.020 M HCl and 50.0 mL of 2.040 M NaOH, each at 24.53ºC, are mixed in a Styrofoam cup calorimeter. What is the final temperature of the mixture if the heat of acid-base neutralization (?Hneut) = ?57 kJ per mole of H2O formed
