• Mrs. Smith has broken a tooth and needs to see the dentist right away. She is experiencing a great deal of discomfort and the schedule is filled.
• Mr. Jones calls, saying his son has just been hit in the mouth with a hockey puck and is bleeding profusely. He cannot tell if any teeth are broken.
• Mr. Green has had a dull, nagging toothache for about a week and would like to be fixed today because he is going away for the weekend.

2. Replace the following statements with more positive ones

• "The dentist is running late."
• "The dentist is tied up with a client."
• "The treatment is not painful."
• "The dentist may have to pull the tooth out."
• "We have had a cancellation today."

3. Create a script for a fictitious dental office and record how you would answer an incoming call and leave a message on a friend or family members answering machine. Ask that person to honestly evaluate your voice quality, using the following questions:

• Did you answer promptly and greet the caller pleasantly?
• Did you identify the office and yourself properly and show that you will take responsibility for the call?
• Did you give the regular office hours?
• Did you provide clear instructions if it was an emergency call?
