Case Study: In the TEDx talk, Why the Best Hire Might Not Have the Perfect Resume, Human Resources Executive Regina Hartley discusses two types of job candidates - the "silver spoon candidate" and the "scrapper candidate". Hartley self-identifies as a scrapper, describing her life as "one part Cuckoo's Nest, one part Awakenings, and one part A Beautiful Mind". Hartley shares that she was the fourth of five children, raised by a single mother in Brooklyn with few comforts.

After watching the video, what are your thoughts?

Questions: In your initial post, address the following:

  • Should recruiters divide candidates into silver spoon and scrapper categories? Why or why not?
  • How would a recruiter define such categories?
  • Could betting on scrappers lead to a waste of recruitment time and resources?
  • How much success and good fortune should a scrapper obtain before being labelled a silver spoon?
  • Where would the balance lie between too much success and not enough overcoming of adversity?
  • Is it necessarily a zero-sum situation whereby the successful traits that Hartley attributes to a scrapper cannot be found in a silver spoon applicant?
