Questions: Please answer the following questions. Remember to use the Discussion Assignment rubric and guidelines to earn the most possible points for this assignment. This week we continue to develop our AS1 by developing a policy analysis part 2 as we narrow in on policy analysis.

  1. Identify one or two current policies aimed at reducing your chosen topic/ cause of death. For example, if the cause of death is heart disease or cancer, did years of cigarette smoking play a role? If yes, then you would search for a current smoking /tobacco policy and describe what policy is already in place to reduce cigarette smoking.
  2. Be sure to look for policy at the state and local (city/town) level, as many public health policies are decided by the state and/or local governance.
  3. Next, consider if this policy should be amended (added to or changed to make it more effective) or if a new policy is needed; if so, explain why a new policy is necessary.
  4. How would a new or amended public health policy help to reduce your chosen leading cause of death (identified in week 2)? Include all background information necessary to place the decision in its proper context. You may find it helpful to include a description of current trends in politics, economics, technology, etc.
  5. Last and not least, describe the role of structural bias, social inequities, health inequities, and racism as they relate to the leading cause of death. How could new or amended policy mitigate or eliminate these barriers and reduce your chosen preventable cause of death?
