If we want our emergent bilinguals to have the power of academic language, we must teach it. No matter how much we build accommodations into tests if we do not teach the language necessary to express knowledge and understand content, we are not giving them the tools they need to be independent. This week, you will dive into how to teach the language of assessments.
You will
Share a test question.
Identify its genre/key use.
Pull and cite three language expectations from the WIDA Framework, Brisk, or Derewianka and Jones for students writing in that genre.
Share how you would teach each of those expectations to students at a given level, before you test them on it.
Week 12: Assessment in Multiple Languages and Genre Consolidation Activity
Learning Objectives:
Reflect on your current assessment practices looking for ways to incorporate translanguaging into your current assessment practices;
Describe translanguaging assessments in your content area;
Discuss translanguaging and assessment with a peer.

Teaching the Language of Assessments answer these questions
1. Put your name and the test question(s) here
2. Identify the genre of the test question. (Using a longer writing prompt would probably be easier.) List at least three language expectations of answering a question in that genre. Use the WIDA Framework, Brisk, and Derewianka and Jones to help you.
3. Identify your learner by English language proficiency level descriptor. Are you teaching this language to a student of beginning writing proficiency or intermediate? (ACCESS scores, screener scores, or just a short written description) LOOK FORS: Able justify methods and identify language needs.
4. How will you teach the language for the test? Plan to teach language expectation one including activities and materials. Be specific. LOOK FORS: understanding of language of testing as expressed in readings on genre/key language uses, clear, appropriate language goals and teaching strategies
5. Plan to teach language expectation two
6. Plan to teach language expectation three.
