Case Study: Leonard moves to Palliative care

Leonard has been a freemason for a long time, is well respected within the community, and was an active member of the freemason's lodge for over 50 years. Once a month, Leonard was picked up by a fellow mason and taken to the lodge to participate in his group. Participating in the freemasons was a highlight in his life and felt a freedom of still being able to socialise and communicate with fellow masons. Leonard lived in a residential facility and recently had a serious fall and because of this, his health has dramatically declined. Meanwhile his cancer progressed to stage four. Leonard is now bedbound has developed pressure sores around his sacrum. Leonard has been placed into palliative care where he is receiving pain management. He is no longer active or able to participate in his freemason ceremonies. The freemasons still show their respect for elder masons, even when they are ill or unable to come to the lodge, and once a year they hold a night in their honour. The local freemasons organised a ceremony to be held in the facility so Leonard could participate and receive his fifty-year medal. This was possible because of the support that was organised through the facility, carers, family and the freemasons. This participation helped Leonard to still feel actively involved with the freemasons and showed respect for his service. In Leonard's dying days he wore his fifty-year medal with pride and had a pride of place on his jacket he requested to wear every day. Leonard passed while holding his medal.
