Question: Ms GF, a 52-year-old female, quit smoking last year. She had had a 30-pack year history of smoking. Lately she has noticed that she is short of breath climbing stairs and walking long distances. She has had a non-productive cough for the past two months. Additionally, she has noticed that she needs to sleep on 2 pillows in order to sleep without waking up coughing. Chest X-Ray is positive for a lung mass that is highly suspicious for lung cancer. Please describe the pathophysiological process in the development of lung cancer. What is the work up that you will order for this patient?
