Assignment:
For my civic engagement paper, I mowed the lawn for a neighbor that struggles to do it himself. I also helped pick up trash around town. Our textbook is American Government 2016 Election Edition. I'm not asking to have the paper written for me but please help me get a good start on it. This class is not my strong suit at all lol
For your final you will be writing a reflection on both your civic engagement/service learning assignment and what you learned in class. The civic engagement plus concepts from class = 70 points. You must provide information on the 5 hours of Civic Engagement as a part of this reflection in order to receive full points - this includes your contact and a summary of what you did.
This is a reflection, not a research paper, so you can and should talk about your own experiences. However, you will also need to use information from the various sources we reviewed this semester.
What to include in your paper:
1. A reflection on what you learned in class and how you will use this knowledge in the future, including:
2. How American government applies to your life. How will you interact with governing units in the future? How will you participate in elections?
3. How will you engage civically in your community? How do you view your role as a participant in a democracy?
4. The complexity of our governing systems and how they are designed to find solutions to the many different beliefs and perspectives we all hold. How does governing navigate these differences? How can we build systems that meet the needs of all people living in our communities? Why is it important for government to think about everyone?
3 different concepts you learned during the course, including sources.
In writing about these concepts explain your understanding of the concept and talk about how it helped you understand how government works. You must talk about 3 distinct concepts (not 1 concept that brings in 3 different facts). A good way to do this is to pull your concepts from different chapters.
16 weeks is a long time, so in order to help you reflect on what you learned over the semester I have created a summary of key concepts below. Please review these before writing your paper!
A summary of your civic engagement or service learning which includes:
- A brief summary of what you did
- Key takeaways or things you learned
- How your civic engagement connected to government
What did you learn during your civic engagement/service learning project? What was good about it and what did you not like? How does doing civic engagement relate to government? Do you think individuals being civically active is a part of what government is all about? Why or Why not?
Give specifics on what you did during your civic engagement/services learning (don't assume I know) and talk about how this relates to one or all of the concepts on American government you discuss in this paper. Do not skimp on the service learning portion as this is a big part of your grade!
Paper Format: Keep this paper between 3 and 4 pages long with good academic form. In general, I am looking for papers that follow the academic style: double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 points, Times Roman, r eferences listed, etc (you don't need a cover page). I am NOT going to reduce points for mistakes in formatting or for imperfect use of academic citation. However, unlike your discussion posts, I will reduce points if you don't use proper grammar and spelling - so spend some time proofing it and checking for spelling. A good rule to follow is to always read through your paper at least twice before submitting it!
Sources: Although this is a reflection, you are also including concepts from the class, and they should be properly cited. Be sure to include your sources - you should have at least 4 sources in the paper but you do not need to look for new resources, they can come from materials we read for class! You should put these sources into a reference page at the end of your paper.
