Assignment:

Mia is 42 years old and is trying to improve her fitness by walking for at least one hour per day. On a warm day, she walks outside, but on rainy days or extremely hot days she chooses to use her treadmill. After her walk, she always notices that her breathing and pulse rate increases.

Before Mia walks, she always has a light meal approximately 60 minutes prior to walking and when she returns she ingests a couple of glasses of cold water.

Mia has noticed that after she walks outside she has a red face, but when she walks on her treadmill with a fan blowing on her face she does not seem to get as red in the face and she feels cooler.

a) If Mia ingests carbohydrates such as sucrose and starch as part of her light meal, describe how they will be digested in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and ultimately absorbed into the hepatic portal vein.

b) As Mia exercises, describe what will most likely happen to her metabolic rate and why this change will occur.

c) Mia's red face is part of her thermoregulatory response during exercise. Explain why Mia's face turns red when walking outside yet when she exercises on the treadmill with a fan blowing her face is less red and she feels cooler.

d) Describe any other thermoregulatory responses that would occur during Mia's exercise.
