Cuba is an outlier country case in the Western hemisphere for its successful guerilla-led social revolution of 1959 which overthrew the US-influenced and elitist Batista political regime, ushering in decades of communist and dictatorial rule under the leadership of the charismatic revolutionary figure Fidel Castro, who would henceforth invoke the revolution in terms of 'patria o muerte'. Indeed, as Chasteen points out, the revolution's sociopolitical continuity came at the expense of all individual liberties.

With time, however, due to a number of factors, both external and internal to Cuba, the revolutionary political culture has become more and more difficult for the regime to promote, calling into question the regime's own survival. What were those factors? How were they exacerbated by the covid-19 pandemic? Discuss, and in doing so, name one post-2020 protest group that has arisen in Cuba, their protagonists, their grievance, and their sociopolitical significance, and the extent to which they have succeeded in bringing forth an opposition political culture in terms of 'patria y vida' and individual liberties in today's Cuba.
