Assignment : Critical Appraisal of a Large-Scale Health Promotion Plan
Assignment requires you to critique a large-scale health promotion plan. Since the marker will need to have fully read the source document in order to mark submissions, you are provided with four health promotion plans from which to choose.
The questions guiding this assignment relate directly to all learning objectives for the course.
Therefore, you will need to demonstrate a strong understanding of the full scope of concepts and materials we have covered throughout.
Assignment Instructions
Choose one (1) of the following large-scale health promotion plans and develop an assignment submission that addresses each of the questions below:
• New South Wales Sexual Assault Strategy 2018-2021
• World Health Organization Global Health Sector Strategy on HIV 2016-2021
• Australia’s Fifth National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan
• New York State Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan 2018-2023
(Note: The above plans may include content that extends beyond the scope of health promotion (e.g., direct clinical care, recommendations for legal reform, etc.). This is often the case with large-scale plans, as it is vital to contextualise health promotion actions and to link them with other areas of practice. You should develop your response with acknowledgement of this, but with a primary focus on the health promotion actions.)
Question 1: How well does the plan make a case for health promotion action (including consideration of the burden of disease/illness, social and other determinants of health, and potential impact of health promotion action)?
(Recommended length: 300 words)
Question 2: How well does the plan reflect strategic frameworks for health promotion action, such as (but not limited to) those outlined by the World Health Organization? (Note: This does not require the document to specifically refer to these frameworks, but rather to reflect the principles and priorities that they espouse.)
(Recommended length: 300 words)
Question 3: How well does the plan reflect underpinning principles and elements of effective health promotion, such as population reach and using evidence to support its recommendations?
(Recommended length: 300 words)
Question 4: How well does the plan reflect behaviour change theories, as well as models for influencing change in communities and/or organisations? (Note: Again, the plan may not refer explicitly to these, but you are encouraged to look for evidence that it is consistent with the relevant principles and priorities for health promotion action.)
(Recommended length: 300 words)
Question 5: Based on your reflections from responding to the above questions, and on your general critical appraisal of the document you chose, comment on the overall quality and likely effectiveness of the plan. If you happen to have criticisms, comment on what you would recommend be changed in order to improve the document and why.
(Recommended length: 300 words)
