Assignment:

Clinical Assessments, Diagnosis, and Treatment- Critical Thinking Assignment In your textbook, you will read about the ways in which clinicians diagnose individuals. They use assessments and evaluations that may include personal testimonies from the individual and/or people close to them. The proper diagnosis is a very important part of the management of a disorder. Even though you are using the most recent version of the textbook, the 10th edition, 2022, there has been a new version of a tool used for diagnostic purposes. The Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM)-5 (2013) has been updated, as of March 2022, to the DSM-5-TR. Please see the specific considerations and overview of the updated manual, in continuity among professionals, and the brief overview of the specific changes.

Follow the direction for each question and submit it in the Assignment file-

Talking about disorders:

1. How we talk about mental health matters. Read the article attached to the module titled, "Choosing an appropriate language to reduce the stigma around mental illness and substance use disorders," Volkow, Gordon and Koob.

Answer the following questions.

o Describe two forms of stigma and the impact they have on treatment.

o Describe person-centred language and how it impacts the overall perception of individuals and treatment outcomes.

DSM updates

2. Watch the video that talks about the culturally specific considerations in the new version of the DSM. The video titled, "The recent changes in the DSM-5-TR with Dr. Altha Stewart," (2:56), American Psychological Association.

o After watching the video, summarize three considerations Dr. Stewart described.

3. The second brief video (I say brief because most videos are over an hour, and although more comprehensive, offer more detail than you will need for this learning outcome.) It is a classroom PowerPoint lecture for the abbreviated version of the changes and updates in the March 2022 version of the DSM. The title and link are "DSM Updates- DSM-5-TR: New Updates to the DSM-5 Explained," (13:27), with Karen Magruder, LCSW- S.

After watching the video answer the following questions.

o Describe at least three of the updates/changes in the DSM-5-TR.

o How do you think these changes will benefit biases that different populations experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders?
