Problem

One of the questions virtue ethicists faced, at least in the early days, was whether virtue ethics could be seen as a theory of right action. This was taken to be a necessary feature of any plausible theory of ethics.

A. Explain Hursthouse's view for how virtue ethics can be a theory of right action, and what she says are the necessary and sufficient conditions for right action. Explain why this is both the standard of right and the standard of approval for actions (that is, not just that they are right, but that we would consider them to be right).

B. Explain how tragic dilemmas are a problem for Hursthouse's account of right action (see Driver). In your answer, explain what a tragic dilemma is.

C. Do you think virtue ethicists can give a plausible response to the problem of tragic dilemmas?
