Assignment:
Intersectionality is a conceptual tool to look at how various types of inequality or disadvantage can intersect and compound creating barriers not understood in conventional ways of thinking (Crenshaw, 2018). Essentially this is saying that as humans we have multiple identities made up of our own unique experiences that come together in us. For example, my personal cultural dimensions (Collins, 2018) are White, middle-aged, middle-class, female, Canadian, agnostic and cisgender. In relationality, I am also a wife, mother, business owner and student.
On a scale from 1 to 10, I find my cultural identities impact my daily life at about a 6 out of 10, in that it has been hard for me to focus on school with a business of my own and family to still take care of. As a woman and a mom, I feel like my systemic factors (social norms that I grew up with) are to make sure that everyone is taken care of before myself, which impacts my daily work and studies.
Does being White have assumptions around it, in that, it is widely assumed that White people have it easier?
