Assignment:

Your lecture and reading for this week have helped us examine how various elements of culture influence death rituals and end of life decisions. For this week's discussion, you're going to have an opportunity to research how specific countries, cultures, or religions can impact a patient's death experience. Here's what you need to do for your initial post (due by midnight Friday):

  • Pick one of the following religious groups to explore in more depth: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, or Hinduism AND choose a country/location OR specific sect/denomination. For example, one might assume that you could research generic Buddhism to understand the death rituals of a native Japanese person. But what if the person is Shinto? What if the person is from Okinawa and not Tokyo? What religion is the Omaha Tribe or the Ponca Tribe and what end-of-life rituals do they have? Be specific in the religion and the people group. Post early in the week with the name of your selected topic in a separate post so classmates know what you've chosen. (Note: You cannot pick the same thing as another student. Doing so will result in points being deducted.)
  • Research and find reputable information related to their unique death rituals and customs related to end of life.
  • Identify the name of the religious group you researched and where they are typically from.
  • First, describe the death rituals associated with this group. These may include specific things that need to be done prior to death, during death or after death. It may also include burial, cremation, entombment practices and customs.
  • Then, please describe what specific and unique things health care providers might be able to do to help patients and families in this culture at the end of life.
