Question: Implicit bias is when we base our decisions on information that is not accurate. This can cause care that is insufficient. During my time as a nurse, I have seen a lot of biased behaviors. There are so many people you meet in healthcare that come from all walks of life. As nurses, even though someone can be different from us, we cannot judge them. Community health nurses can recognize bias, stereotypes and implicit bias in the community by understanding different cultures, personalities and thought processes. Educating yourself on other cultures can assist community health nurses in being able to recognize when stereotyping is happening. Project Implicit developed a tool called the Implicit Association Test. This test is to help organizations investigate awareness and bias. This test is designed to find nurses who may not be aware of their biases (Winters, 2019).

Being culturally competent is a forever learning process. In order to improve cultural competence healthcare professionals, need to know how to provide services in a culturally competent way. Some professionals may need to be taught or need to self-educate themselves in difficult cultures. There are many different training courses all over the country, but healthcare workers need to be dedicated to the process and put into action what they learned. It is also important to realize that this is a process and being a lifelong learner (Georgetown University, 2019).
