Assignment:

Working in teams to plan a public relations campaign and integrated communication campaign is essential to the success of the program. The agency I used to work at followed an approach to brainstorming that stemmed from an improv technique. I loved using the approach at the time, and even now, years later and in a different industry I still utilize the same approach. The approach is called, "Yes, and..." Within this approach, you essentially confirm the idea of one person ("yes") and then immediately build upon it ("and...").As Eli Woolery states, "To keep the energy high and the ideas flowing, a good brainstorm shares a lot in common with the improv technique of "Yes, and . . ." When an idea is put forth, participants should be encouraged to build on it, putting a positive spin on the contribution. Critical energy can be diverted into productive ideation in this way.

For example, "Yes, I like that idea, and we could go even further by . . .""What I'd like each of you to do for today's activity is to "Yes, and..." one of your classmates' posts from two class sessions ago. Two class sessions ago, you posted one key takeaway from a research report and published information on how you would (1) research one aware public; (2) persuade one aware public to become an active public. Today, I'd like for you to pick one of your classmates posts and do the following:

  1. Read the report they linked and post another key takeaway from the research report they selected. Make sure it is different from the one you selected.
  2. Identify a different research method your classmate could utilize to learn more about the aware publics they identified, and explain why this second research method could also be useful.
  3. Build upon the approach your classmate described regarding how to persuade one of the organization's aware publics to become an active public. How can you "yes, and..." their approach?
