Scenario

You have been asked by the general manager to write a short report recommending how to improve the quality outcomes of a key process in the organisation. The document needs to be well argued and referenced in order to convince the leadership team to adopt your recommendations.

The leadership team are a sceptical group, so you will need to back up your ideas by referring to appropriate literature and making logical arguments. They are expecting a document of about 20 pages in length.

Exercise

Identify an important process in an organisation, with which you are familiar or can observe directly, that needs improvement from a quality standpoint and develop a report in accordance with the general manager's request. You are welcome to use the process that delivered the product or service you discussed as part of AT1 or you may choose a new process. Make sure you choose a real process which you can study and describe accurately (no hypothetical's please).
Please discuss this with the lecturer if you are unsure.

You are free to structure your report in a form that you think is most appropriate, however it is suggested you include the content below:

- Executive summary
- Context and background
- Present a definition of quality appropriate to the process identified
- Describe the existing process
- Identify problems with the existing process and try to identify causes of the problems
- Recommended process improvements and provide a rationale for the improvements chosen
- Describe the improved process
- Briefly describe a process change strategy (how to move from the old process to the new process)
- Describe the expected quality outcomes
- Conclusion

Process is not described thoroughly and/or seems to contain inconsistencies. Few, poor or no diagrams. Process is described, but lacks specificity. Flowcharts or other tools have been employed, but may lack completeness. Errors in diagrams may be apparent. Process is described in sufficient detail to be readily understood. Flow charts are employed or other graphical techniques. Description strikes the right balance of completeness and simplicity. In addition to qualities described in “Good”, the description demonstrates insight born of observation and contemplation. The description demonstrates a deep understanding of real (as opposed to ideal) process function. Proposed Improvements Improvements are not practical and don't seem to address shortcomings.
