Case Study: A nurse can gather cultural information using various ways. Nurses use their skills, cultural awareness, and knowledge to gather and understand their patients' cultural details in three ways. The first is through observation. A nurse observes the manner of dressing, behavior, language, and the general appearance of the patient even before engaging him or her in a dialogue (Schuster, 2017). Secondly, a nurse can learn the basic information regarding the predominant cultural groups so that they can identify them and understand their cultural beliefs, some of which influence care. The third approach is interacting with patients and inquiring about their origin, migration, beliefs, and other things that hint at their cultural affiliations.
Question: Cultural competence entails integrating knowledge, skill, attitude, and experience that considers cultural values to develop a respectful, comfortable, and meaningful interaction with others. It enlightens the nurse on how to handle diverse patients by helping them better understand their patients so that they can identify and manage cultural issues that might interfere with care for patients (Danso, 2018). It allows nurses to provide patient-centered care, which is more effective and efficient. A nurse demonstrates cultural competence when they understand that clients are unique, and their cultural beliefs, practices, and values must be respected and appreciated.
