Please read through the following Case Study. Reflect on your learning and your own research within this Unit. 

Research and prepare different actions to respond to each of the issues presented below.  Your responses must reflect your knowledge, skills and application for this unit.  Your response is to be presented in as a comprehensive plan, to be handed to the General Manager.  Please select and describe the organisation you are referring to in this Case Study (your choice). 

Case Study (scenario or situation)

You have been promoted into a new leadership role.  The team is made up of five individuals, and you. 

  • Sarah who is task focused and a bit of a loner, from Northern Territory
  • David who is outgoing and personable, he is from Ireland
  • Nan is opinionated, likes to be in charge and can be seen as abrupt. Her mom was a famous French chef
  • Yourself, who likes to take things slow and steady and thrives on developing frameworks to help the team work in. You were born and bred in Brisbane
  • Frank who is the systematic, quietly spoken member of the team. He prefers his own company but enjoys having heated debates with Nan. He has recently emigrated from India and is Hindu.

You and your team have only been together for a month.  Sarah, yourself and Nan come from different areas of the (select any type of) business while David and Frank were employed via your contracted recruitment partner, Recruitment Apple.

Due to the company's rapid growth, not a lot of infrastructure is currently in place in the way of policies and procedures.  This has created a few unpleasant moments for you as your team has been having quite a lot of conflict over roles and responsibilities.  There have been a few negative comments about Hindus - and their strange eating habits.

You have a big project coming up that requires you to get your team pulling together and overcoming their differences.

Develop a plan that includes the following detail:

  • How to get the team working effectively and more in harmony with each other, showing how you have identified and tailored your own communication to meet not only the individual team member's communication styles
  • How you could get your team to work through cultural issues
  • List and explain at least three (3) different strategies on how you will address the identified difficulties within the team
  • Explain how you will develop and maintain effective workplace relationships within your team, incorporating how you build and maintain trust and confidence within these relationships
  • Explain how systems, policies and procedures can support the development of effective work relationships focusing on interpersonal styles, communications, and conflict resolution
  • Explain how you will provide feedback, guidance and support for your new team
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the work you have completed and identify strengths and opportunities for improvement
  • Identify any legislation that all employees need to be aware of, when working together as a team.

Make use of a profiling tool to help you identify the different interpersonal communication styles.  Complete a profile tool on yourself and attach it as an appendix.  Explain how you might use this with other team members.

Ensure that your presentation is (i) grammatically correct (ii) error-free (iii) in simple English (iv) comprises of an average of 15 words for each sentence and, (vi) there are separate paragraphs for each new content/topics or discussions.  Include references to relevant legislation, which must be defined.

Attach a copy of the profiling tool you have used and would recommend for other team members to complete.  (Tip:  Read all text aloud to identify any gaps and correct, and ask another person to proofread to check for accuracy -to gather valuable feedback, before you submit).

A minimum of 1,000 words is required (attachments are not to be included in word count).

Writing strategies and actions for future improvements

A Case Study is designed for you to demonstrate your skills in reading, accurately interpreting and providing workable responses and strategies. 

Check that your responses provide:

1. Identification and clarification of the key issues.  Discuss and provide some suggestions as to what has caused the issues;

2. Key facts and information which is relevant, and demonstrates your ability to provide solutions;

3. Profile tool, and any templates or resources which could assist you in the future when managing their teams;

4. Recommendations (short term and long term) to improve the current situation. 

Also ensure appropriate use of headings and formats to reflect a professional presentation.
