Assignment:
Carol Dweck is the author of the book, "Mindset" which encourages learning how to fulfill our potential through a "growth" mindset. Growth mindsets are important for leaders and those who must assess leadership. Thinking about this in a sociological manner, we know our thoughts are powerful. In fact, your textbook discusses this through the self-fulfilling prophecy concept by Robert K. Merton (Openstax, 2017). You will recall the definition of this concept is "an idea that becomes true when acted upon" (Openstax, 2017, 4.11). Reflect on that concept for a moment and then read the attached excerpt from Dweck's book (p. 6-7).
Dweck Quotation
Critically apply concepts/ideas from the attached excerpt and your sociological readings to analyze the character in the fictitious scenario below. Cite once from the Dweck excerpt and at least once from your textbook in your analysis. You can add additional external references if you want.
Scenario: Devin is seventeen. His parents encouraged him to decide on a career for college since he will graduate in less than a year. However, Devin is very anxious about choosing a career path because he likes both math (a natural science) and sociology/counseling (the social sciences.) He knows these two careers are completely different. In fact, he was fully considering math until a situation with his cousin happened. After that, he thought about majoring in a counseling field because his cousin had some mental health issues and overcame those through seeing a therapist. He has considered how fulfilling it would be to help people like his cousin.
However, his dad, a math teacher at his high school, wants him to major in science or math. While Devin is good at math, he thinks it will be a harder path in school. His father told him that he can develop many skills through the math major and that leaders are born. Devin's father believes Devin is a natural-born leader and stresses this often. Devin does find that he can figure out most math problems easily but beats himself up if he does not figure a problem out faster than the other students. It makes him feel dumb and want to quit. He does not think he will have this problem if he majors in a counseling field because human behavior seems more common sense than math.
