The four qualities of adult learners I have decided to describe are:
1. Time perspective: Adult learners want to be able to apply what they have learned immediately. They want the amount of information to be able to perform the job well and not to have information that doesn't pertain to the topic being discussed.
2. Readiness to learn: Adults tend to come prepared for class as they have chosen to learn about that topic. These learners use readiness to learn to cope with real life issues.
3. Self- concept: Adults expect a certain level of independence when learning whereas children rely on the teacher for information and how they are taught that information. Adult need to be seen as capable, responsible, and self- directed.
4. Experience: Adult learners draw from their own experiences to help understand new knowledge. Every adult has a different level of experience and can promote other adult learners' experiences and draw new/ different information/ideas.
Companies and HR are making progress with accommodating the different ways people learn. Companies are making training sessions available when the learners are available. Whether it be on their phones, online, offline, day, or night (Donnithorne-Nicholls, 2017). Companies are also trying to make learning fun. While the spurts of information may be shorter, they make the information more memorable by having the learner engage in the material (Donnithorne- Nicholls, 2017). A small number of companies allow time for their employees to perform their own training throughout the week as part of their job. More companies may want to consider this strategy as they are investing in the employee and will become more valuable.
