The invention of the radio and the telephone made it possible to warn people in advance when they are located in the path of a storm. Since the 1950s, the United States has relied on volunteer storm spotters as part of a severe weather early warning system. Storm spotters perform an essential service, giving the National Weather Service the best picture of what is happening on the ground. Spotters travel to key lookout points on the edge of town and use amateur radio to report their observations to their local network. The network then summarizes these reports and notifies the National Weather Service.

For this Lab Activity, read through the information on Storm Spotters on page 366 of your textbook. Use online or other resources to research more information about how to become a certified storm spotter and the training involved. Be sure to use accurate, reliable resources. use photos or illustrations to make your pamphlet appealing and to support your information. Be sure to cite the sources for your images and information.
