These are general dissertation writing tips for the dissertation introduction. The introduction chapter sets the stage for what will be presented in the pages that follow it and should include:
1) A statement of the dissertation problem,
2) A brief overview of the dissertation study, leading to the research questions, these give the reader an indication of the general issues of the problem being investigated.
3) The specific aims and objectives of the dissertation -. These need to be clearly and unambiguously shown as the work will need to establish whether or not they have been achieved. Hence they should be clear and measurable, and derived from the research question.
4) A discussion about the significance of your study.
5) A short overview of the research methodology - identify your research philosophy, approach and methodology.
6) A description of the various dissertation chapters. The first section of the dissertation introduction section is a statement of the problem your dissertation addresses.
In this section of the introductory chapter of the dissertation tell the reader what major problems your dissertation will address and how your dissertation will fill any research gaps. Through writing, show the reader why your dissertation matters and how it might help the field.
Next, provide a brief overview of the dissertation study for the reader. More specifically, in the introduction section of your dissertation you should briefly summarize your major dissertation research questions which will focus the aims and objectives. Clearly state the aims and objectives of the dissertation, be unambiguous, set the scene.
In the next section of our dissertation introduction chapter you should discuss the significance of your dissertation. This section will help the reader not only understand the dissertation's significance, but tell the reader how your dissertation might address the problem at hand. In the final section of your dissertation introduction, briefly tell the reader what is in the dissertation chapters that follow. Tell them what is in dissertation chapter one through to the concluding dissertation chapter. In other words, you provide the reader with a clear road map.
