Question: We have explored different cultural case studies throughout the quarter together. We have approached them largely from a culturally relativist perspective, meaning we have explored the cultures with respect and a desire to understand who they are, what they value, how they operate, and even why they do what they do. We closed with the case study of Israel/Palestine to push into the question: Does Cultural Relativism Mean Moral Relativism? If we respect all cultures, does that mean we have to accept all their practices/beliefs, etc.? Can we respect a culture and also critique a cultural behavior or cultural reality? Are there any ethical or moral principles that you feel are important regardless of one's culture? My question for each of you is: Do you think there are any universal human rights that all people are entitled to, at least in principle? What freedoms, protections, or rights would you want for yourself, and for other people?
