All students must present a 10-minute, online PowerPoint presentation to a small group of colleagues (classmates) and the unit coordinator during weeks 6-14 in their regularly scheduled practical session (in person). The topic of the presentation must relate to the use exercise for the management and /or treatment (i.e. the secondary prevention) of a chronic disease or disorder (e.g. breast cancer, kidney disease, heart disease, osteoporosis, depression, anxiety). The content of the presentation, clarity, knowledge and professionalism will be assessed. Areas to be covered within the presentation should include:
Question 1. Brief explanation of the disease/disorder. Relevant statistics/trends (1-2 slides max.).
Question 2. Aetiology and comorbidities (1-2 slides max.)
Question 3. Conventional treatments (e.g. therapy, medication) (1 slide max.)
Question 4. Effect on health status, i.e. physiological, functional and/or psychological effects of the disease and/or treatment-related side effects (1 slide max.)
Question 5. Common barriers to exercise (1 slide max)
Question 6. Known benefits of exercise, according to the research (1 slide max)
Question 7. Exercise-related services available for this disease/disorder in your local area (if any). An explanation of how these services operate and how they can be improved or created would be beneficial. A schematic diagram may also be useful [Note: Think about linkage between healthcare professionals, and the types of services/facilities that would best cater to the needs of this population (e.g. in relation to barriers)] (2 slides)
Question 8. A case study (3-4 slides):
a. Describe the case, including age, health history (e.g. diagnosis, time since diagnosis, comorbidities, medical treatments received, etc.), results of pertinent pre-exercise screening and assessment (e.g. BMI, waist circumference, biochemical lab results, or other relevant assessments, e.g. depression scale results in cases of depression)
b. Outline an initial 8-week exercise prescription (FITT) with supervised exercise taking place 2 sessions per week and unsupervised exercise taking place up to 5 sessions per week. Consider facilitators/enablers for unsupervised component, i.e. gym membership, access to other facilities, influential others. Include recommendations for daily activities and lifestyle behaviours to enhance health and well-being.
c. List three to five practical assessments you would track and that other healthcare professionals could track, and the frequency of these assessments.
Question 9. List of references (2-3 slides)
The presentation must be delivered in accurate layperson's terms and the evidence must be supported with appropriate references (including at least 10 journal articles). Use bullet points only and minimize the writing and direct reading from slides. The inclusion of tables, figures, icons will be beneficial.
