Question: The topic of privacy over security is one of great disagreement. Having privacy is something most citizens want, but understanding the need for security to maintain the safety for the citizens is crucial. Protecting privacy is something that Europe and the Untied States both agreed upon in the 1970's as security over information from citizens had gone too far. At the time, there weren't nearly enough principles in place, and the citizens were unaware of just how much they were being monitored. Unless written in law, companies should not be able to access your private information without your consent, and principles were put into place to protect privacy. These principles and rights of the citizens detailed how there was an abuse of power by president Richard Nixon and the director of the FBI (Zalnieriute, M,. 2022). Overall, the goal was to maintain every citizens privacy and rights, as upholding these rights is a key component to a successful society. Having trust within the society is extremely important for all citizens to thrive in a democracy.
