Question: When someone thinks of communicating with people from other cultures, the first thing that comes to mind is often speaking another language. While being able to speak another language is helpful, it is also important to understand how cultures use language.

For this discussion, choose two of the cultures discussed in Chapter 8 of your textbook and explain the following:

• How the use of language provides insight into each culture.
• How each culture uses language to communicate that culture's values.
• At the end of the chapter, the authors provide eight suggestions for developing language competence in intercultural settings. Choose the three suggestions you find most helpful and explain how they might assist you when communicating with someone from a culture different from your own.
