Problem: Now that you've read about song learning and the genetic and environmental factors influencing song learning, we're going to look closely at how our urban environment affects song learning and song structure. To do so, your first task is to read a chapter from Menno Schilthuizen's excellent book Darwin Comes to Town, which is about how urbanization influences evolutionary processes; specifically, we will read a chapter entitled "Songs of the City." This chapter looks at the myriad ways that urban noise is shaping how birds communicate. After reading the chapter, you'll take a deep dive into the topic by reading the paper cited below. There will be four paper breakdowns throughout the course, each focusing on a different section of scientific papers. In this first paper breakdown, we focus primarily on the introduction; however, it is important to carefully read the entire paper as well as the chapter by Schilthuizen. Chapter: Schilthuizen M. 2019. Songs of the city. In: Darwin comes to town: how the urban jungle drives evolution.
