Article Title: United States Import Safety, Environmental Health, and Food Safety Regulation in China
The article titled: United States Import Safety, Environmental Health, and Food Safety Regulation in China, is the work of Edward O. Nyambok and Justin J. Kastner, done in the year 2012. The article basically covers the environmental health and safety regulations in China.
As I was reading through the article, the author gives background information on why the environmental health and food safety regulation in china is of concern to the United States. To bring this fact out, the author identifies that the U.S imports about 2% of its seafood and about 99 % comes from China. With such an amount of import and the reliance on the foods, there is need to understand and know how safe the imports are for consumption (Nyambok et al, 2012). The article concentrates on imports safety and the Chinese aquaculture where most of the imports are sourced from. Due to contamination and problems that arise from the export of foods in the international market, there is need for exchange of information especially that involving food safety. From their research, the Chinese market of food production has contributed highly to overuse of natural resources, pollution and degradation (Nyambok et al, 2012). From the article, there are a summary of factors that contribute to the Chinese environmental and food safety problem, such as pollution, lack of education among other which all result to the food been contaminated. The article identifies that the poor state of environmental conditions in china has highly contributed to the presence of contaminants in their exports thus the U.S government ensures that the imports getting to the country are safe for consumption. Thus, measures have been put in place to ensure that the contaminated foods are not imported and remain safe away from the borders of the states in order to ensure that they have no entry. The FDA which the authors cite as having the responsibility of ensuring consumer safety, has the mandate to ensure that the imports are inspected for safety before entering the borders and that only permitted brands are able to import the products. These measures have been put in place to ensure that the consumer in the U.S remains safe and that environmental safety is maintained. The government also intends to work together with other governments, including the Chinese government to ensure that the imports are safe.
The article covers the health and safety concerns that arise from having imports especially those of food products in the country and the need of ensuring that they do not cause harm to the consumers. From the article, I learn that there is need for every country to ensure that their production does not cause any environmental health and safety problems, which could see the effects reach beyond the borders. The article also educates on the need of having inspections carried out on imports before consumption. Because we may maintain safety within the borders, but the problem may be from out of the borders.
