Assignment - Electric Lift Platform -Design
Assignment Brief
The aims of this module are to enable students to...
• understand top level integrated system design for a product;
• experience the process of system design.
Learning Outcome 1: Describe how products with various combinations of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems, interact together to become a top level system design;
Learning Outcome 2: explain how the top level integrated system design affects and relates to the detail design of the product.
Learning Outcome 3: produce a top level integrated system design for a product which may contain various combinations of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems;
Learning Outcome 4: present the product user inputs and system outputs, and the need for system feedback and user control.
Title: Electric Domestic Lift Platform
Brief Mechanical Design:
Design a low cost, affordable robust Electric Powered Lift Platform for the Home DIY market
It should be inherently safe and easy to use and stow away to within a minimum storage volume of say 1.5 meter square x 0.4 metre thick.
It should be designed to be operated and transported by just one person and require only one person to prepare for use and prepare for stowing.
It should enable the operator to lift himself or herself up to a height of 3 metres and have a safety cage in which the operator can safety work without the fear of falling out.
It should cost no more than £200 to make 50,000 units/year for a 5year period.
Target selling cost retails at £450 each to be sold in retail outlets such as at B&Q, and Garden centres.
It shall be designed for lifting of one person and the safe working or lifting load is a 20 stone man.
Its main uses are: Painting and decorating of walls and ceilings, guttering cleaning, Washing high sided vehicles such as vans, Outdoor repairs to Walls, guttering, pipes,
Hedge Trimming and tree lobbing. Fence and garden Shed repair or painting.
It shall be easily transported with its own wheels, which must allow for outside manipulation and transporting. It shall also contain a levelling system to accommodate all types of terrain.
System Design Brief
From the product brief you are to System design the components for such a design with the following constraints:
1. The lift platform must be electrically powered, mains or battery
2. The system must be safe to use outdoors as well as indoors
3. The time to lift the platform with the maximum SWL of 20 stone man is
3 metres 15sec to 20 secs
4. The lift to be operated by the user when standing on the lift platform
5. Safety devices must be incorporated - i.e fail to safe
