Assignment: Health & Health Systems- Paper
Topic:
Hospitals (re cco b y Freddy/ Kelly, Aria n a also works at OHSU, ok with the topic as well) Anything else?
Potential topics:
Hospitals
1) Staffing- there is a mass exodus of staff either retiring or are being burnout from the pandemic/short staffing. At this point, it appears that we cannot train enough nurses fast enough to make up for what has been lost and keep up with the increased demand for healthcare. There will b e a lot about this, it will b e super relevant and fairly easy to fill up the pages about.
a) I'm a big fan of this! I think there is more than enough to talk about with the issues of staffing, I have a bunch of information as well. Is everyone else good with this? How should we handle the break up of tasks/ sections for the outline?
2) Hospital acquired infections
3) Covid ...many places were underprepared, hospitals also lost money due due cancellations of elective surgeries, we can also discuss how things have changed The VA Healthcare System
4) How it's run, who gets benefits and who doesn't, also the glaringly obvious faults but wonderful benefits.
5) Compare and contrast to other government healthcare systems like medicare and medicaid?
Paper components:
1) Reform initiative/intervention being made in the area to solve a problem (last few years)
2) Explain how this effort may impact the other aspects of the system
3) How the system may impact the effectiveness of the intervention

3) At least one reference

Paper Outline
Topic:
Navigating the healthcare workforce decline: addressing staffing shortages and burnout in the wake of the pandemic.
Sections: Pre-Pandemic:
1) Before the pandemic, the healthcare industry already faced staffing issues that were later exacerbated yb COVID-19
2) Recently there was a study done on the national nurse shortage that talks about pre-covid issues (Aiken et al., 2023).
3) Historically , hospitals have high turnover rates because fo heavy workloads and insufficient staffing.
4) In-patient demand was on the rise due to various factors, one example being an aging opulation.
During-Pandemic:
Staff starting to get burnt out quicker, quitting o r retiring early
Staff getting sick themselves, ending up in ICUs, not able to return to work
Hiring down a s new nurses don't want to enter the workforce b y being in a hospital during a pandemic
Rise in travel nursing and their pay- hospitals having to rely heavily o n staffing which costs more than staff nursing
Lower paying jobs in hospitals hard to fill- people not making much aren't wanting to risk their lives in a hospital
Staff mental health challenges- stress, anxiety, depression
Post-Pandemic:
Current State o f employment
3 % above expectation
No longer increasing in numbers
Nurse burn-out
Future of Employment
Baby boomers living longer than ever, more healthcare workers will be needed Lack of nursing education staff means less nurses entering the workforcePotential Solutions (Tele health as an example):
Tele health is being used a s a n alternative to long wait times at hospitals and for convenience for the individual, it also helps nurses b e less burdened b y not having to take care of one additional patient.
Another alternative is to bring in other licensed nurses to help with the increasing gap in the nurse-to-patient ratio.
Reshaping the current internal structure to benefit nurses, such a s being more flexible with their shifts etc.
Barriers/Limitations of Solutions (te le he a lth):
Technical difficulties, individuals not having proper electronic devices o r in te rn e t access Regulatory issues with laws, location of patient during appointment (in or out of state) Patient privacy and HIPAA, security risks o n hospital end and patient end Limitations to appointments- can't do proper physicals, take labs, have imaging doneThe amount o f staffing is still needed, but does offer flexibility o f working in person and a t home, could relieve some staffing problems
