Case Study: Choose a health problem that affects people around the world and find reliable statistics that support the global nature of this problem.

Using scholarly sources, research and gather global data about the health problem you have identified. For example, the World Health Organization posts disease and health risk prevalence data on a country by country basis. Searching websites of humanitarian organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, Operation Smile, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation can provide additional context about the health problem.

Questions: Address the following points in your presentation:

  • Describe the cultural and global context of this health problem from a nursing perspective.
  • Consider how the structure of a health care system affects the way the problem is addressed for example, through access to care, diagnosis and treatment options, public policies, and economic considerations such as the cost to the patient.
  • How is this problem addressed in a universal health care system?
  • How is it addressed in the U.S. health care system?
  • What is the difference in how this problem is addressed in a developing country versus in the United States? You may identify a specific developing country if that is helpful.
