RSPB Environment and Education Centre, Rainham Marshes, Kent: Model and Drawing Exercise

This project focusses on the RSPB Environment and Education Centre in Rainham Marshes, Kent.

You should approach the project as if you are working on its design (i.e. before it was built); you are planning to build it exactly as it is (i.e. don't make any changes) and you need to communicate your ideas to your client. The client particularly wants to know about the sustainability features of the building and what the building will look like.

You should produce:
• 1 x A3 drawing which communicates the Sustainable Systems in place on the Building.
• A 1:125 scale model of the building to communicate what the building will look like externally.

Drawing:

You will need to research the building and find out what elements of the design and construction have contributed to the buildings ‘sustainability' credentials. You will then need to produce a drawing that communicates and explains these elements effectively. You are encouraged to show things graphically wherever possible (minimise the use of text).

It is up to you to choose which type of drawing(s) is / are most suitable at communicating the work. It could be one drawing that uses the whole page or more than one on the same page. Multiple drawings may include plans, sections, elevations, etc. Drawings to not need to be exactly to scale but should look roughly correct and should display all (or as many as possible) aspects of the engineering system (i.e. do not produce separate drawings for each aspect of the design).

Submissions should include engineering drawing conventions, i.e. border, title block, labels, lines (type and weight), hatching, legend, view titles, (e.g. plan), dimensions, text, etc. wherever appropriate.

Information sources must be properly referenced.

Model:

The model of the building should be made using the ‘development' technique (as taught in 2nd drawing class) on A3 card. The model should represent the external features of the main building's superstructure (i.e. no need to show the basement or other underground features).

The main body of the building should be made from 1 ‘development' or ‘net'. Extra features e.g. louvres, balconies, chimneys, access ramps, etc. can be separate if you wish. The model is there to communicate how the building will look and does not need to explicitly highlight or explain the sustainability features shown on the drawing. You may use other materials to enhance the model if you wish, however, you client values sustainability and so these should be recycled materials only (i.e. you should not spend any money on materials!).

• Show everything that is visible from outside only - doors, windows, roof, etc.
• Nothing on the model should be printed.
• Use a scale of 1:125.
• You may use colour to enhance your model.
• Use glue and not tape.

Your model is of the building only - you do not need to show any of the surrounding land or buildings. On the underside of your model you must write your name and your student number.

Shweeb Design Exercise Alternative Assessment

Shweeb Design Project - Station

Your design team represent ‘Shweeb Monorail Technology' and have spotted an opportunity to implement and test your new 2 person Shweeb cars around a proposed theme park in North Kent. Your job, as part of this team, is to design a showcase station that will invite and facilitate use of the Shweeb from the main entrance to the theme park. The theme park itself is being sponsored by TeslaTM and the design of your station should take inspiration from the brand and link in with its core values and, where appropriate, its products.

You will be required to submit 2 x A3 drawings of your station which many include sections, floor plans, elevations, callouts and labels.

These drawings should communicate the design and should consider:
• What the station will look like.
• How it will tie in with the sponsoring company / theme.
• Is the aesthetic in keeping with a ‘state of the art modern theme park' (i.e. the station should be at the ‘iconic / striking' end of the scale rather than an uninspiring building)?
• How the station has been designed to function efficiently. How will people use the building and interact with it and has this experience been optimised?
• What the structural system will be (no calculations or checks are required but a sensible structural system should be visible on the drawings).
• Any appropriate Health, Safety and Welfare considerations associated with your design.

Submission Procedure Hardcopy Submission to front office with coversheet Assessment Weighting and Marking Coursework is weighted as 30% of the module. Overall module mark will be capped at pass mark (40%). Assessment Criteria • Meeting requirements of the exercise • Does the model accurately communicate the exterior of the building’s superstructure? • Does the drawing communicate the Environmental systems? • Are the environmental systems correct? • Presentation, including neatness • Use of drawing conventions (where appropriate)

Assessment Weighting and Marking Coursework is weighted as 35% of the module. Overall module mark will be capped at pass mark (40%). Assessment Criteria • Meeting the requirements of the exercise (see next page) • Technical feasibility of design o Will the design meet the ‘need’? o Is the design safe? ? This is a concept level design so no calculations are required but some consideration of a structural system should be visible. o Can it be built? o Is the design (including layout) optimised / efficient? • Communication o Are your design ideas clear and justified? o Is the submission neat and well presented? o Have you chosen sensible and useful view types and locations? • Creativity / originality o Is the design in keeping with the wider theme / sponsor?
