Exploring Examples of Critical Thinking
The authors of our text continually remind us that while our goal may be to become accomplished critical thinkers, it takes time and constant reevaluation. The best thinkers, the authors remind us, "routinely take thinking apart." These extra credit assignments will encourage you to do just that, take thinking apart, or "analyze thinking."
For extra credit, watch two of the 13 most popular TedTalks listed here Then answer the questions below, in at least six, complete sentences for each. Answer the questions for each talk individually; therefore, when you are done, you will submit two sets of answers, one for each TedTalk. Note: Be sure to reference specific topics and details from our course material and text using page number whenever possible. This is NOT a speech / film review, but rather an exploration of how the topics in our text, and our discussions regarding critical thinking, are presented in these talks.
What is the topic, who is the speaker, and what is the date of the TedTalk you watched? Note: answer in a complete sentence, but for this answer only you do not need to meet the at least six sentence requirement.
Provide at least 5 examples of how the speaker demonstrated critical thinking throughout this talk (use specific examples from the talk and use our text material for support in explaining why these are examples of critical thinking).
How did watching the talk affect your understanding or appreciation of critical thinking? (Again, use our text material for support in explaining how your understanding was impacted. Simple statements such as "I learned a lot" or "It impacted me a lot" will NOT earn credit. You must refer back to our text and the material we have discussed in class)
Did you agree or disagree with the speaker? Why ... elaborate, explain ... here is where you demonstrate that you thought critically about this topic; you must provide details. Include what parts of critical thinking, as outlined in our text, you used in listening to and evaluating this talk.
