Problem

In this situation, both the nurse and the PT need to communicate adequately, respect each other, and understand each other. "Nurses are expected to communicate frequently with numerous medical providers," so it is essential that the nurse speaks with the PT and addresses her concerns. When approaching the PT, the nurse should do so calmly and respectfully, preferably in a private area because it is a private concern. She could then use the DESC script to help with conflict management and resolution. "Describe the specific situation or behavior and provide concrete evidence or data. Express how the situation makes you feel and what your concerns are. Suggest other alternatives and seek agreement. Consequences should be stated regarding impact on established team goals or patient safety" (Box 18-3 Sheldon, 235). To prevent future conflict, the nurse and PT can engage in different team-building exercises promoting respect and understanding. This issue must be resolved respectfully because both people will continue working together. The nurse and PT can resolve conflicts and promote patient safety by having mutual understanding and open communication.
