Question: Fossil fuels are a new-ish topic to me so I enjoyed your example about mercury and coal combustion. I also found that most pollutants from fossil fuels will travel very large distances before setting into the earth, etc. As a dietetics student and future registered dietitian, I also was interested in the part about bioaccumulation in the food chain. This usually occurs when the contaminants enter through soil, water or air where our food is being grown. The FDA states that the most common environmental contaminants leaking into our food system include arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium. One role of the FDA is to monitor the amounts of contaminants in food and work with manufacturers to fix any issues (FDA, n.d.). I wonder how the pollutants in our food system compare to those in other countries. Include two references.
