Assignment:
Dr. Abouelnaga is still concerned about whether the hospital will be able to deliver its strategy and how the performance management system will facilitate or inhibit it. He is concerned about five things in particular:
1. Physicians' discomfort with objective measurement
2. The potential for fixating on KPIs and ignoring other aspects of the job
3. Poor response to changing KPIs (it is possible that employees perceive this as a way for the hospital to avoid its existing commitments for paying bonuses)
4. Potential disincentive for creativity and innovation
5. Rigidity of the system, which could hamper the hospital's ability to adapt to changing market conditions.
6. Briefly describe the importance of this organization and its mission to the community it serves. (i.e., What makes this organization unique and why is that important to its patients?)
7. Which ONE of the five concerns listed above should Dr. Abouelnaga consider the greatest concern for the hospital's strategy? Why?
8. How does the performance management system contribute to or limit this concern?
9. Share a key lesson you learned from the case's discussion of defining value creation locally. How could it apply (or is it already being applied) to your organization?
